On Sunday, footage of an anti-Israel protest at Harvard showed demonstrators raising a Palestinian flag in a spot reserved for an American flag, while chanting “Free Palestine.”
X account Libs of TikTok posted footage and images from the incident. In the video, a trio of protestors can be seen raising the flag above a statue on Harvard campus, while others cheer and chant pro-Palestine slogans.
“Harvard students cheer as they replace an American Flag with a Palestinian Flag,” Libs of TikTok posted along with the video. “Are you paying attention yet?”
According to the Washington Free Beacon, two other Palestinian flags were raised over an encampment in Harvard Yard, where students and other protesters have been sleeping in tents since wednesday.
The flagpoles were attached to University hall, where American flags, or flags of visiting foreign dignitaries, are usually flown.
About an hour after the footage was filmed, staff of the university removed the flags, despite the audience’s disapproval, who chanted “Shame!” and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”
Harvard University spokesman Jonathan L. Swain told The Harvard Crimson that raising flags is “a violation of University policy and the individuals involved will be subjected to disciplinary action.”
The raising of Palestinian flags came just hours after Tom Dunne, Harvard’s Dean of Students, sent out an email warning that anyone continuing to stay in the encampment would face disciplinary action.
“Let me be clear: Maintaining and participating in this extensive encampment of tents in Harvard Yard constitutes an ongoing violation of University rules by interfering with the normal activities and operations of our campus and disrupting the work of fellow students and other Harvard community members,” said the email.
“Those participating in the ongoing encampment and associated activities will face disciplinary consequences as outlined in existing policies. Repeated or sustained violations will be subjected to increased sanctions.”
Dunne did not give a time requirement for the encampment’s dispersal, but the Crimson reported that he, along with six other administrators, were seen later that night scanning the IDs of students in the encampment and writing down ID numbers.
Each student who was scanned was handed a slip of paper, which warned that disciplinary action would occur and seniors could have their degrees withheld, just weeks before the university’s commencement ceremonies.
“Repeat violations of University and School policies will result in increasingly severe sanctions,” the slip read. “Students with pending disciplinary matters may not be granted a degree.”
Later in the evening, individuals associated with the Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine Instagram account posted a photo of one of the flags flown on the campus building alongside the caption “WE FLY FOR PALESTINE.”
“For well over 200 days, Harvard has ignored the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Until they agree to meet our demands to disclose and divest from Israeli apartheid and occupation, we will make Palestine unavoidable,” organizers wrote. “We will continue this liberated zone and fly the spirit of Palestine!”
