New York state attorney general Letitia James (D) has a scandal on her hands after a local prosecutor in her state was caught pulling rank to get out of a speeding ticket – all on bodycam video.
Monroe County prosecutor Sandra Doorley copped an attitude with a Webster policeman whom she called an “a–hole” after he caught her exceeding the speed limit by 20 mph.
Prosecutor’s shocking outburst
Doorley failed to pull over, leading the cop to her home. As the officer walked up to Doorley, the first words out of her mouth were, “I am the DA.”
“I don’t really care,” she said, when told she was speeding.
Doorley then tried to get out of trouble by phoning the Webster chief of police for help – and amazingly handed the phone off to the patrol cop before walking away into her garage.
“I don’t know why you’re acting like this towards me,” the officer said. “You said you’re a DA?”
“I am the DA,” she snapped. “Let me get you my badge.”
At one point, Doorley challenged the officer to write the ticket, implying she would not face any consequences because of her position.
“If you give me a traffic ticket, that’s fine. I’m the one who prosecutes it. Just go ahead and do it,” Doorley said.
“Humbled” prosecutor apologizes
Doorley apologized for her behavior in a video statement Monday after she became the target of criticism from Governor Kathy Hochul (D), who called for a misconduct investigation.
Doorley couched her apology with excuses for the outburst, citing a medical event in her family and the stress of her job.
“I was dealing with three homicides that occurred on the weekend, I watched a video where an innocent cab driver was executed and I was still reeling from a frightening medical concern that my husband received that afternoon,” Doorley said.
The prosecutor, who pled guilty to the violation, said she would be placing the matter in the hands of another DA.
“I’ve been humbled by my own stupidity and I am fully to blame. I will make this right,” she said.
Every member of the Rochester City Council sent a letter to Attorney General James asking her to investigate Doorley.
“This incident has led us to question her fitness to serve as District Attorney, and we believe an investigation by your office is warranted,” they wrote.
