The question of whether President Joe Biden is willing or able to debate presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump ahead of November’s general election has weighed on the minds of many in recent months, but it now appears the nation may have something of an answer.
During a Friday interview with radio host Howard Stern, Biden indicated — though somewhat vaguely — that does intend to engage in a debate with his Republican rival, a revelation that prompted Trump to seize the opportunity and declare his immediate readiness, as the Associated Press reports.
Biden’s Friday surprise
The president’s newfound willingness to debate Trump was revealed during an appearance on Stern’s Sirius XM program when the host broached the specific topic.
Asked whether he would debate the former president, Biden declared, “I am, somewhere. I don’t know when.”
“But I’m happy to debate him,” the president added in what was something of a turnaround from prior responses to similar questions.
Not only had Biden’s campaign staff previously declined to agree to the candidate’s participation in traditional debates, but the president himself also mused that his presence at such events would “depend on [Trump’s] behavior.”
Given that Biden is rarely allowed to speak to the media in an unscripted, off-the-cuff manner, pundits have wondered aloud whether the president is mentally or physically capable of a head-to-head, on-stage matchup with Trump.
Raring to go
Once Trump caught wind of Biden’s statement on Stern’s show, he did not delay in expressing his readiness and enthusiasm for a debate.
Almost immediately after Biden’s interview, as Fox News notes, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to extend an invitation for the president to come to the courthouse where his hush money trial is taking place, so that the two could square off there.
“In fact, let’s do the Debate at the Courthouse tonight – on National Television, I’ll wait around,” Trump said.
After court wrapped for the weekend on Friday, Trump emerged to address the media and again touched on the subject of a debate with Biden.
“He can do it anytime he wants, including tonight. He can do it tonight. I invited him to the courhouse that he has us tied up in….[b]ut I’m here, I’m ready willing and able,” Trump stated, as are the millions of voters who would surely tune in to watch such a spectacle unfold.
