Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) on Tuesday filed a resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) after she suggested some Jewish students are “pro-genocide.”
Bacon said he does not plan to make his resolution privileged, which means the House will not immediately vote on the measure. He said he will work with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and GOP leadership on timing.
But the mere introduction of the legislation marks a sharp rebuke of Omar, who has found herself in hot water with Republicans in the past.
“It’s unacceptable to say, calling Jewish Americans that are Americans, calling them pro-genocide,” Bacon told reporters Tuesday. “It’s just unacceptable. So I want to take a bold stand.”
The Hill reached out to Omar for comment.
Omar — one of three Muslim lawmakers in Congress — drew criticism last month when, while speaking to pro-Palestinian protesters at Columbia University, she said Jewish students are either “pro-genocide or anti-genocide.”
“I think it is really unfortunate that people don’t care about the fact that all Jewish kids should be kept safe, and that we should not have to tolerate antisemitism or bigotry for all Jewish students, whether they are pro-genocide or anti-genocide,” she said when asked about antisemitism on campus.
