Tijani Babangida, the Olympic Games soccer gold medalist, has been involved in a deadly car accident.Â
The accident, according to The Sun, has led to the hospitalization of Babangida and his wife as well as to the death of his younger brother, Ibrahim Babangida.
Here’s what we know so far:
According to Punch, Babangida, who is now 50 years old, was involved in the fatal car crash on Thursday.
The outlet got this information from Babangida’s former teammate, Emmanuel Babayaro, the General Secretary of the Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN).
Babayaro said:
Comrades! Let us be in prayers for our president, Tijani Babangida, who just had a ghastly motor accident along the Kaduna-Zaria Eoad. Ibrahim Babangida, his younger brother, died on the spot from the accident while Mr. President (Babangida) and his family were taken to the hospital. May the soul of Ibrahim Babangida Rest In Peace with God, amen.
“Yes, it is true.”
Babayaro provided more details on the crash in a separate statement.
“Yes, it is true. The accident happened while they were on their way to Zaria from Kaduna. His brother Babangida died on the spot from the accident,” he said.
Babyaro added, “he accident happened today (Thursday) this afternoon and his wife was also involved in the accident. He is currently admitted at Shika Hospital in Zaria, where he is receiving treatment, and. to the glory of God, he is conscious.”
Further details still unknown
There are still several details about the crash that remain unknown. This includes who was involved in the crash, who was driving, who was in the vehicle or vehicles, and what Babangida’s vehicle hit, among others.
We do know that at least Babangida, his wife, and his brother were in the vehicle. His wife is also said to be in critical condition, but it appears that she and her husband are both recovering.
Background
For those unfamiliar with Babangida, he played, as a winger, on Nigeria’s soccer team in the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. There, he and his teammates won the gold medal.
He also played for Nigeria in the 1998 World Cup in France.
When Babangida was not playing for Nigeria, he was playing, most notably, for the Ajax soccer club. During his seven years with the team, he helped them to win both the league trophy and the World Cup.
Babangida quit playing soccer in 2004, after a stint with Changchun Yatai in China. After his retirement, he became a soccer agent.
