Five West Virginia middle schoolers protested a transgender athlete’s participation in a track and field competition and have been barred from future meets.
Resist The Mainstream reported on these girls last week, highlighting that male athlete Becky Pepper-Jackson from West Virginia, who identifies as a girl, clinched victory in a shot put competition as female contestants refused to play against him.
Riley Gaines, who has been a staunch and outspoken critic of men competing against girls in women’s sports, applauded the girls who refused to compete
The students have since been blocked from upcoming meets by The Harrison County Board of Education after their protests at the April 18 shot put competition, as reported by West Virginia Watch.
This prompted the state attorney general, Patrick Morrisey, to file a lawsuit against the Harrison County Board of Education on behalf of the dissenting students.
West Virginia law notably prohibits transgender girls from playing on girls’ sports teams, however, a recent federal appeals court ruled that the law couldn’t lawfully be applied to Pepper-Jackson.
The New York Post reports that Judge Toby Heytens asserted that providing the eight-grader with a “choice” between not participating in sports or participating solely on boys’ teams “is not a genuine choice.”
The outlet also states that Morrisey has strongly opposed both the ruling and the treatment of the student-athletes who protested competing against Pepper-Jackson.
“Their actions at the earlier track meet were not disruptive or aggrandizing,” Morrisey wrote in the amicus brief filed April 26. “They were the quiet demonstration of the student-athletes’ evident unhappiness with the competitive consequences of a federal appellate court’s decision.”
X users have voiced their outrage over the protesting girls being barred from future competitions, drawing attention to how the nationwide push for inclusion of trans-identifying boys at the expense of young athletes has even infiltrated places like West Virginia.
“Here are the board of education members responsible for the banning of these girls who bravely protested being forced to compete with biological males,” The Babylon Bee’s Joel Berry lamented on the platform. “Contact them and respectfully make your voices heard.”
Riley Gaines also voiced her opposition to this situation, and Morrisey reaffirmed his dedication to safeguarding girls’ sports.
“These girls stood up for what they believed and their coach barred them from competing. Insane,” Gains said.
“It’s dangerous to teach young girls to ignore the threats their eyes and ears are warning them of. How do some call this ‘progress’?” she continued.
Morrisey then replied, “I will do everything in my power to defend these brave young girls. This is just wrong. We must stand for what’s right and oppose these radical transgender policies.”
“Thanks to @Riley_Gaines_for her leadership on this critical issue,” he added.
Resist The Mainstream reported last week on a California dad who went viral after he tearfully explained how his daughter pulled out of a race because she was forced to compete against a boy.
He swiftly received praise from other users on X following the circulated remarks.
