On Friday, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) took to social media to speak on her upcoming book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” Specifically, Noem was addressing a passage from the upcoming book that discussed her decision to euthanize a 14-month-old dog after she was deemed “untrainable.”
Noem released a statement to X in which she reacted to a piece by The Guardian, who previewed the book, and gave additional context to the passage.
“We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years,” Noem wrote on X. “If you want more real, honest, and politically INcorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping, preorder ‘No Going Back’”
In the passage, Noem recounts shooting her dog, Cricket, after several instances of her being out of control and not responding to commands.
Noem reportedly wrote that, while out hunting pheasants to teach the dog discipline, Cricket became excited and disrupted the activity by chasing the birds, the Guardian reported, citing the book.
Noem attempted to control the dog verbally and using a shock collar, but she was unable to get Cricket to respond.
While the issue was concerning, Noem wasn’t willing to put the dog down until she reportedly escaped from Noem’s truck, running onto the property of a local family and killing several of their chickens.
Noem claimed that the dog behaved like “a trained assassin,” and met with the owner of the chickens, paid them for the mistake and helped clean up the mess.
While Noem said that the dog was “the picture of pure joy,” she ultimately determined that the dog was “untrainable” and dangerous.
“At that moment. I realized I had to put her down,” Noem reportedly wrote. “It was not a pleasant job, but it had to be done.”
Many prominent social media users bashed Noem for her decision to put the dog down, with several offering alternate paths that she could have taken at the time.
“Stop telling me Kristi Noem had to shoot the dog because it ate chickens. She could have rehomed the dog. Just stop,” wrote conservative commentator Joey Mannarino. “If I don’t get it, no undecided voter will ever get it.”
“If you find a dog “untrainable” and you feel like the only answer is to shoot it in cold blood – I’ll gladly take the dog to live on the Catturd ranch until I can find – a loving home,” wrote X account Catturd. “All my abused rescues are so hard to take care of at first but if you give them maximum love, eventually, they’ll turn into the most beautiful, loving gifts you’ll ever know.”
