A 17-year-old boy named Omar Bin Omran vanished nearly 30 years ago, with many speculating that the boy was kidnapped.
He’s since been found in a shocking location, with police taking an old 61-year-old man into custody following the stunning rescue captured on camera.
Omran, who is one of nine children, disappeared in Djelfa, Algeria back in 1998, Daily Mail reported.
He was allegedly abducted while on his way to a vocational school, sparking a search for him.
His family believed he had perished in the civil war between the government and Islamist rebel groups, which engulfed the North African nation in violence during the 1990s and early 2000s.
The truth, however, lay just 200 meters away from his family’s home.
Authorities found Omran alive in a hole in the ground within his neighbor’s sheep pen, hidden beneath stacks of hay on May 12.
Social media and Algerian television networks broadcasted footage of the moment authorities discovered Omran in the underground pen of his alleged captor’s house.
It captures a tense scene where viewers can see torchlights shine into a pit surrounded by hay.
A visibly shocked Omran looks up and there are noticeably pieces of straw in his hair. Algerian newspaper El Khabar reported that a dog, recognizing his scent, had pined for him near the spot where he was held.
El Khabar alleges that the old man captor poisoned the dog to deter the family.
Other circulated images show the bearded man emerging from what appears to be a sheep pen, alongside a photo from his teenage years, sitting with a dog and young children before his disappearance.
Questions arise, however, about why Omar did not call for help during nearly three decades in captivity.
Algerian media reported that Omar claimed he couldn’t call for help due to a spell cast by his alleged abductor, though some suggest his diminished psychological state may be to blame.
Omran, who is now 45 years of age, was discovered amidst haystacks after the captor’s brother aired grievances on social media, reportedly over an inheritance dispute.
This prompted Omran’s family to storm the house in search of him.
His alleged captor attempted to flee the scene as the Omran was found, but was restrained and subsequently arrested.
Public prosecutors in Djelfa confirmed Omran will receive psychological care after his rescue. They also vowed to secure justice for him.
“The Djelfa Attorney General’s Office informs the public that on May 12 at 8 p.m. local time, it found victim Omar B, aged 45, in the case of his neighbour, B.A., aged 61,” stated the prosecutors.
A court official in Djelfa reported: “Two days ago, on May 12, 2024, the Public Prosecutor’s Office received, through the regional department of the National Gendarmerie in El Jadid, a complaint against an anonymous person claiming that the complainant’s brother, Omar bin Omran, who has been missing for about 30 years, is in the house of one of his neighbours, inside a sheepfold.”
“Following this report, the General Prosecutor of the Court of Idrisiya in the province of Djelfa ordered the National Gendarmerie to open an in-depth investigation, and officers went to the house in question,” the official continued. “The missing person was found, and the suspect, the 61-year-old owner of the house, was arrested.”
The suspect, reportedly a civil servant who lived alone, was frequently seen buying food for two people, according to Algerian media.
Omran’s mother unfortunately died in 2013 without knowing the truth about her son’s fate, per Daily Mail.
Reports indicate that Omran learned of his mother’s death while in captivity.
A relative announced on Facebook: “Thank god my cousin was found. Bin Imran Omar is in good health after 26 years of disappearance. Awaiting details of the case and investigations.”
