A petition has gone viral demanding the release of Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker from the team and the NFL following his fiery graduation speech over the weekend.
Butker’s commencement speech went viral earlier this week because he blasted “delusional” President Joe Biden’s Catholicism, Resist the Mainstream reported.
He pointed out that several advocates of Covid lockdowns and other policies also identify as Catholic, emphasizing, “Merely identifying as Catholic is insufficient.”
“These are the uncomfortable truths often avoided in polite conversation,” he added.
“If we are to be men and women of this era, we must abandon the illusion of the ‘Church of Nice’ as a viable option. Let us always communicate and act with kindness, but let us never mistake kindness for timidity,” he continued at one point of his speech.
“Before addressing the societal challenges we face, we must first rectify the shortcomings within our own Catholic community,” Butker shared.
The 28-year-old and three-time Super Bowl champion is now racing backlash over his remarks, as more than 80,000 signatures have been gathered to terminate his seven-season association with the Chiefs, Daily Mail reported.
The outlet noted that the number skyrocketed on Wednesday evening, increasing from 30,000 to over twice as high in a matter of hours.
The Change.org petition description reads: “The harmful remarks made by Harrison Butker, kicker of the Kansas City Chiefs, during his commencement address at Benedictine College were unacceptable.”
“His comments were sexist, homophobic, anti-trans, Pro-Life and racist. These dehumanizing remarks against LGBTQ+ individuals, attacks on abortion rights and racial discrimination perpetuate division and undermine human rights,” it adds.
“These comments reinforce harmful stereotypes that threaten social progress. They create a toxic environment that hinders our collective efforts towards equality, diversity and inclusion in society,” it continues. “It is unacceptable for such a public figure to use their platform to foster harm rather than unity.”
The description goes on to argue that “discriminatory attitudes” like Butker’s commencement comments contribute to societal issues.
The petition organizers then demand accountability from American sports figures, seeking an immediate dismissal of Butker from the Chiefs.
Butker, an outspoken Catholic and married father-of-two, notably congratulated the women receiving their degrees at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas on Saturday.
He asserted that most of the women were probably more excited about getting married, having children, and staying at home to raise them, rather than establishing their careers.
Butker also criticized Pride month and Biden’s stance on abortion.
He notably donned a tie inscribed with the Latin phrase “Vulnerari Praesidio,” translating to “to protect the most vulnerable.”
“I chose to draw attention to the unborn by selecting a Latin phrase, as I am delving into Latin studies through attending Latin Mass,” he said when speaking about his choice of attire to Daily Mail.
“To me, the unborn epitomize the most marginalized in our society. Devoid of a voice, lacking resemblance to humans, diminutive in size, they cannot advocate for themselves,” he added.
The scathing critique of the president included a disapproval for his gesture of making the Sign of The Cross during a campaign stop.
