CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Multiple law enforcement officers were shot and injured in east Charlotte Monday as they took part in a US Marshals Task Force investigation.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police issued a ‘severe alert’ on Monday afternoon, April 29, after numerous law enforcement officers were struck by gunfire.
The active SWAT situation is happening in the 5000 block of Galway Drive.
An original police call made over the radio on Monday, April 29, indicates at least two officers were shot and injured during a barricade situation.
According to CMPD, the US Marshals Task Force, which is made up of officers from multiple agencies, was conducting an investigation in the area when a suspect began shooting at them.
CMPD said multiple law enforcement officers have been rushed to nearby hospitals in Charlotte. Heavy police activity could be observed at Atrium Main, the region’s Level 1 trauma center.
“There is an active investigation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive. Steer clear of the area,” CMPD emphasized on Monday. “Residents stay inside of your homes.”
The CMPD SWAT team remains at the scene as “gunfire continues.”
“More information will be released as soon as the situation stabilizes,” CMPD said.
CMPD and Meck County units rush to the scene
Multiple CMPD patrol units and Mecklenburg County Sheriff units were spotted speeding towards the crime scene on Monday afternoon.
The York County Sheriff’s Office has offered their assistance, stating, “The YCSO stands ready to assist our brothers and sisters at CMPD in any way we can. Sheriff Kevin Tolson and our staff are monitoring the situation and praying for nothing but positive outcomes for all officers involved.”
Multiple roads remain shut down
Many roads remain closed Monday afternoon for faster ambulance transport, CMPD explained.
Interstate-77 North remains closed near Charlotte at Exit 9, NC 160 / I-277 North / US 74 West, due to heavy police activity. The road is expected to reopen by 7 p.m., NCDOT said.
CATS issued several closures stating, “Expect delays along the Gold Line due to emergency vehicles blocking the tracks from Elizabeth and Hawthorn to Sunnyside Station. A bus bridge has been requested between CTC and Sunnyside.”
CATS riders should also expect delays along bus routes.
Several schools are on lockdown
“We have two schools on full lockdown, Devonshire ES and Briarwood Academy, due to serious police activity in the area,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said. “Students will not be dismissed from Devonshire ES and Briarwood Academy until we get the all-clear from CMPD.”
CMS said it also has two schools on modified lockdown, Cochrane Collegiate and Lawrence Orr ES. “These schools are dismissing on a staggered system,” school officials said.
Transportation will be impacted for all schools during dismissal on Monday.
At this time, details are limited as to what the US Marshals Task Force was investigating in east Charlotte before gunfire broke out in the area, injuring several law enforcement officers.
