Special Counsel Jack Smith was dealt a massive legal blow earlier this month when Judge Eileen Cannon indefinitely postponed the start of former President Donald Trump’s classified documents trial.
Yet rather than examine how Smith had handed himself a defeat, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow recently claimed that his problems are caused by Republicans.
Maddow: Anti-Trump prosecutors have face “superhuman pressure”
According to Newsweek, Maddow leveled that allegation against the GOP during Tuesday’s broadcast of her nightly television show.
Specifically, she asserted that Republicans have unleashed an “intimidation” campaign against Smith along with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
“The rule of law depends on the people who enforce it being able to enforce it, even when those who are implicated in a legal proceeding are powerful people. These are human beings,” Maddow said.
“They are not magic. They are not bulletproof. They are not superhuman,” she continued before adding, “And right now, they have no one defending them as they’re being asked to bear superhuman pressure and threats.”
“We are not standing up to defend these people”
The left-wing television host went on to assert that prosecutorial matters are “supposed to be a nonpolitical process part of our system, right?”
“We imagine that’s who we are as a country, but we are not showing it. We are not standing up to defend these people, at least not yet,” she later said.

Maddow went on to accuse Republicans of exerting “a ton of inappropriate political pressure” in the form of “dishonest intimidation” on Trump’s behalf.
However, recent events suggest that Trump’s prosecutors have needed no assistance from the GOP in creating challenges for themselves.
Trump prosecutors have wracked up self-inflicted wounds
Fox News reported last week that a Georgia appeals court will hear arguments over whether Willis should be disqualified from Trump’s Fulton County case over her inappropriate relationship with attorney Nathan Wade.
What’s more, Smith came under scrutiny earlier in the month when it was revealed that staff handling his prosecution of Trump for mishandling documents themselves mishandled documents.
Finally, eyebrows were raised in Trump’s New York on Monday hush-money case after Bragg’s star witness Michael Cohen admitted to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the Trump organization.
