Seven Republican Senators voted on Wednesday to confirm Eric Garcetti, President Joe Biden’s nominee for ambassador to India and former Los Angeles mayor, despite his ties to individuals belonging to alleged Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intelligence front groups.
Republican Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Steve Daines of Montana, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Roger Marshall of Kansas and Todd Young of Indiana voted to confirm Garcetti following a delay of over 20 months arising from allegations that, while in office, he helped cover up sexual assaults committed by his former aide, Rick Jacobs. The confirmation vote, 52-42, also comes just days after the Daily Caller News Foundation revealed that a mayoral fund set up by Garcetti accepted over $1 million in donations from individuals who belong to alleged CCP influence and intelligence fronts.
“We need an ambassador to India,” Graham told the DCNF.
Three Democrats voted against Garcetti, but the seven Republicans saved his nomination.
The three Democrats senators who voted no were Hirono of Hawaii, Kelly of Arizona, and Brown of Ohio.
The Daily Caller had reported earlier this week:
Then-Mayor Garcetti met and headlined events with members of multiple alleged front groups serving the United Front Work Department (UFWD), a CCP agency which “coordinates and conducts influence operations,” according to a report from the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC). Furthermore, over the years, the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles, which Garcetti created in 2014, received multiple donations from the foundation of business magnate Walter Wang and East West Bank, where Dominic Ng serves as president and CEO.

Donald Trump Jr. responded to the news that Garcetti’s nomination would be pushed through.
“Why are Republican Senators throwing a lifeline to save a radical Dem like Eric Garcetti? Democrats would NEVER do this to save a Republican nominee in peril. This type of weakness is exactly why we’re losing our country. Democrats play hardball, while Republicans keep playing tee-ball,” Trump Jr. tweeted.

Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer also weighed in, tweeting, “Despite the concerns & credible information about his handling of harassment and assault allegations lodged against his former top aide that caused some Senate Democrats to vote NO – former LA Mayor Eric Garcetti was approved to Ambassador to India because 7 REPUBLICANS VOTED YES.”
