Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump were once political allies.
Now it looks like the two are headed for a showdown.
And now Ron DeSantis had one private conversation that turned Trump’s life upside down.
After months of coyly hinting at a 2024 presidential campaign Ron DeSantis is finally putting the word out that an announcement is imminent.
DeSantis is reportedly telling supporters in private that he plans to run for president.
Former Trump administration Homeland Security official Ken Cuccinelli reportedly will head the Never Back Down super PAC which will be the official vehicle for big-money donors to contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to support DeSantis’ campaign.
The Washington Post reports:
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) has indicated privately that he intends to run for president, according to two people familiar with his comments.
A super PAC that seeks to draft DeSantis into the race launched Thursday and is likely to serve as an approved outside spending vehicle for his campaign, three people familiar with the planning said.
And DeSantis will visit the early nominating states of Iowa on Friday and Nevada on Saturday as he tours the country promoting his memoir.
Cuccinelli is one of the many movement conservative figures supporting DeSantis.
Texas Congressman Chip Roy — who led the opposition to Kevin McCarthy ascending to the position of speaker of the House — is another prominent conservative backing DeSantis.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds — whom Trump endorsed — appeared with DeSantis at an event in Iowa to promote his new memoir “The Courage to Be Free” in yet another sign that DeSantis is a candidate in all but name only.
DeSantis also previewed how he would run against Trump in a Fox News interview ostensibly designed to promote his book.
The Florida governor would not engage in any direct attacks or name-calling against Trump while making it clear he was his own man.
“I’m appreciative of a lot of things he did,” DeSantis added. “It doesn’t mean I agree with everything he’s doing lately.”
At a campaign event in the Republican stronghold of The Villages DeSantis told an enthusiastic crowd that he planned to complete and honor Donald Trump’s legacy using an example of how quickly his administration rebuilt a bridge destroyed during Hurricane Ian as evidence DeSantis could one day finish construction on Donald Trump’s border wall.
The Post also reported:
At one early stop in the Villages, a heavily Republican retirement community in Florida, DeSantis touted his administration’s work to quickly rebuild bridges after a hurricane and suggested he could send people to the southern border to build a wall — an allusion to Trump’s key campaign promise from 2016.
“We’ll get it done,” DeSantis said to cheers.
When Ron DeSantis runs it will not be a campaign to force Republican voters to reject and rebuke Donald Trump.
DeSantis is running as the next evolution of the Trump movement.
