President Joe Biden revealed Monday night he has been personally chosen by former President Jimmy Carter to deliver his memorial service eulogy when he dies.
“I spent time with Jimmy Carter, and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough,” Biden told guests at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser, according to a UPI report.
“He asked me to do his eulogy,” he added.
Biden then reportedly said, “Excuse me, I shouldn’t say that.”
The Carter Center announced last month, “After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team.”
Following that announcement, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre commented to reporters that the two have a long history of being friends. She said, “It goes back to 1976 when then-Governor Carter was running for president and then-Senator Biden was the first senator to have endorsed Jimmy at that time.”
Correspondent Christopher Cadelago tweeted Monday, “Joe Biden, at a fundraiser tonight in Rancho Santa Fe outside San Diego, reveals that Jimmy Carter asked that he deliver a eulogy for him when he dies, then stops himself from saying any more. ‘Excuse me, I shouldn’t say that.’ More Biden on Carter: ‘I spent time with Jimmy Carter and it’s finally caught up with him, but they found a way to keep him going for a lot longer than they anticipated because they found a breakthrough.’”
