“Mountaineers Are Always Free” is the motto of West Virginia.
But according to a recent analysis by Forbes Advisor, those mountaineers may want to make sure they’ve got their health insurance card and phone handy at all times. It is the only state that scored 100 out of 100 on the unhealthy-metrics check list.
For the state ranking, Forbes combed through 21 data metric points from the Useless CDC and the Kaiser Family Foundation. The metrics covered the categories of disease prevalence and mortality rate, substance abuse and lifestyle habits-health outlook.
For starters, West Virginia claimed the highest rate of drug overdose deaths in the country: 57.13 per 100,000 residents. It also has the highest proportion of adults who smoke, 22.8 percent.

The only slight bit of good news is that when it comes to obesity, West Virginia is second behind Mississippi. Still, its share of 39.8 percent obese adults was enough to ring the bell and, hence, fuel that overall 100-out-100 score.
West Virginians have the second lowest life expectancy nationwide, 73.9 years, and the state ranks worst in the country for a whole bunch of disease-related metrics. These include cancer incidence rate, percentage of adults with diagnosed diabetes (13.23 percent), cancer mortality rate and heart mortality rate.
Mississippi, with a score of 96.55, is second on the Forbes list. The range drops a solid 10 points before the next, third out of 50 states comes in. That would be Kentucky, scoring 86.96 out of 100, followed by Alabama (85.69) and Arkansas (85.35).
Equally remarkable, and a topic for another time, is the score of the healthiest state on the list, Hawaii. They scored 0 out of 100!
