Jose Antonio Ibarra, the illegal immigrant accused of killing 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, has been charged with 10 counts for the alleged crime.
The 26-year-old Venezuelan national was said to have murdered Riley on Feb. 22 when she was out for a run on the trails of the University of Georgia campus in Athens. Ibarra was notably caught illegally crossing the border into the U.S. via El Paso, Texas in September 2022, only to later be released into the U.S., according to ICE and DHS sources who have spoken with Fox News.
Ibarra was also indicted by the grand jury on two counts of kidnapping with bodily injury, two counts of aggravated assault with intent to rape, two counts of aggravated battery, obstructing or hindering a person from making a 911 call, tampering with evidence and acting as a “peeping Tom,” the outlet reports.
The “peeping tom” charge involves Ibarra allegedly looking through a window to spy on a university staff member on the same day he allegedly murdered Riley.
Ibarra allegedly killed Riley by inducing blunt-force trauma on her head in addition to “asphyxiating her in a manner unknown to jurors,” per the indictment.
Riley’s running loop is very close to Ibarra’s apartment complex, just a five-minute walk away, per Fox News.
The University of Georgia has said that the school has earmarked $16 million “over the last eight years to hire more police officers, install more security cameras, enhance lighting, establish a nightly rideshare program, and create a UGASafe app” after Riley’s death.
“But we are committed to doing even more,” UGA claimed, adding that it “approved an additional phase of lighting improvements and security camera installations” and “will continue to evaluate” safety protocols.
Joe Ibarra lived with his brothers, Diego Ibarra, 29, and Argenis Ibarra, 24. Argenis and Diego were previously deported for illegally entering the U.S. on April 3, 2023, near Eagle Pass, Texas. They were then arrested later on for illegal crossing on April 30 near El Paso, eventually being let go before they traveled to Athens.
Federal court documents state that Diego Ibarra is accused of green card fraud and is tied with a known Venezuelan gang located in the U.S.
