Former Vanderbilt football coach Steve Sloan, one of only two winning coaches of the team, died Sunday with dementia at age 79.
Sloan had been in memory care for the last three months in Orlando, Florida.
He was born in Austin, Texas but grew up in Cleveland, Tennessee.
He coached Vanderbilt for two years, gaining a winning record of 7-3 in the second year, 1974. The only other football coach to do so was James Franklin, who now coaches Penn State.
Sloan also coached at Texas Tech, briefly returning to Vanderbilt as an offensive coordinator in 1990.
He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
