The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) has just made it clear that it is not on board with those Democrats who are currently calling upon U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to retire.Â
The congress members indicated as much, according to the Washington Examiner, in a statement that they released on Saturday.
For those unfamiliar with the CHC, it is a group of 38 Democratic members of the U.S. Congress that “addresses national and international issues and crafts policies that impact the Hispanic community.”
Sotomayor is the first Hispanic to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, having been nominated by former President Barack Obama.
Background
Before we get to the CHC’s statement, we’ll get you up to speed on what has been going on.
Some members of the political left have been calling upon Sotomayor to make an early exit from the Supreme Court in order to avoid a repeat of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg situation.
To refresh your memory, Ginsburg, in the years prior to her death, was also called upon by Democrats to step down from the court so that the president at the time – Obama – could replace her with another liberal justice. But, Ginsburg refused to do so, and she ended up passing away when Donald Trump was the president, allowing him to replace her with a conservative justice, Amy Coney Barrett.
The Democrats who are calling for Sotomayor to step down are afraid that history might repeat itself.
Sotomayor is currently 69 years old, and reports have indicated that she has some health problems.
The CHC’s statement
In their statement, the CHC rejected the calls for Sotomayor to retire.
The congress members said that Sotomayor “has proven to be a brilliant jurist, tough questioner, and fair arbiter of the rule of law throughout her tenure on the Court. She has played a part in some of the most impactful rulings in recent American jurisprudence, many of which have protected or expanded critical rights and programs that progressive lawmakers and advocates have fought for and celebrated.”
There is no doubt about that. Sotomayor is a progressive liberal, through and through.
Some individual members of the CHC have also released statements of their own on the matter, including U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY). “Justice Sotomayor has been a trailblazer for the Latino community and has every right to serve on the Supreme Court until she makes the decision that it is best for her to retire,” Torres wrote.
Sotomayor, for her part, has remained silent on the matter.
