Ron DeSantis is stepping up while the federal government is missing in action.
Now, with Haiti in crisis, Florida is leading the way once again.
And Ron DeSantis took one victory lap that left Joe Biden hanging his head in shame.
The political turmoil and surging gang violence in Haiti have the Caribbean nation headed toward a civil war.
Americans are stranded there after the country’s two major international airports shut down.
The violence engulfing much of the country is forcing Americans to shelter in place.
Biden asleep at the switch
President Joe Biden’s administration was caught by surprise when the situation in Haiti began to deteriorate after acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigned.
The State Department told stranded Americans to wait for updates for weeks while the nonessential personnel were evacuated from the U.S. Embassy.
And the eventual plan to fly them out of the country, at their own cost, required Americans in the capital of Port-au-Prince to travel nearly six hours through gang-held territory that is an active war-zone.
Florida rescuing Americans trapped in Haiti
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis acted while the Biden administration was fumbling around trying to figure out what to do.
Rescue flights to get Floridians and other Americans trapped in the country were organized by his administration.
DeSantis announced that more than 200 Americans have been evacuated from Haiti because of Florida’s effort.
“When Floridians and other Americans are in need, the State of Florida acts,” DeSantis said. “I’m pleased to announce that we’ve been able to successfully rescue more than 200 Floridians and other Americans from Haiti. Even when the federal government fails to act, Florida will always step up.”
A total of 220 Americans have been rescued from Haiti since March 20 by Florida, according to the DeSantis administration.
Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie said he was proud of his agency’s effort to save Americans.
“Being able to support our residents in this time of crisis is because of Governor DeSantis’ leadership and the collaboration between our state agencies and private and nonprofit partners,” Guthrie said. “I am proud of the State Emergency Response Team for working around the clock to coordinate these emergency flights and get Floridians home safely.”
Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) has also led rescue missions into Haiti to evacuate Americans.
More than 450 Americans have been rescued from Haiti since March, which means Florida is doing the heavy lifting.
Ron DeSantis is leading the charge to evacuate Americans during an international crisis while the federal government is asleep at the wheel.
