This was the stupid thing The Right decided to argue with itself on social media this weekend. I discussed on my program today why America was correct in dropping the bomb — and how nearly twenty well-documented years of raping and pillaging before Imperial Japan’s entry into WWII, the attempted coup after Nagasaki and Hiroshima to prevent Japan’s unconditional surrender, and Operation Downfall and Ketsugo highlighted how many more millions of casualties were expected if Japan was not wholly defeated. Their navy was gutted but the Bushido-minded Imperial Japanese still had kamikazes, a multi-million strong army, and a plan in place to militarize a huge chunk of their civilian population.
Did you know that there was a surge in production of Purple Hearts for the expected astronomical casualties from Operation Downfall, the Allied plan of invasion slated to be the largest amphibious operation in warfare history, matching or exceeding that of D-Day? Do you know how many more Japanese were expected to die in the process?
If it’s about saving lives then do the math. It unarguably works in favor of using atomic bombs. This is what is called actual ”America First.” Putting Americans first. It’s not my responsibility to care for the citizens of other nations, it’s the responsibility of those nations to care for their citizens— particularly if those nations are foreign adversaries.
People who lack the stomach for hard calls, and cold truths, and clinical analysis regurgitate sparkles and rainbows with claims that there existed some magical alternative to submit Japan, an alternative of which only couch quarterback wizards in present time are aware.
“We bombed innocent children” some have opined on social media. These completely historical anuses only arrive at this statement by conveniently excusing the horrors suffered by countless innocent women and children at the hands of the Imperial Japanese empire — and what American children would be forced to endure should the Imperial regime continue. Those kids were OK to kill, I suppose they mean, the people who offer zero differentiation between killing on purpose as a terror tactic and innocent loss of life in a war zone. It’s a statement that presupposes the guilt of Americans; and just as Israel is condemned for defending itself, so, too are those who profess this sentiment condemning the United States for defending itself. It’s the same argument that Hamas supporters use to condemn Israel’s self-defense.
Excusing the outright barbaric brutality of Imperial Japan and their determined refusal to cease hostilities by blaming the United States for defensively putting an end to it isn’t just revisionist history, it’s anti-American propaganda.
Those who beg the question that the US manufactured a narrative to justify using atomic bombs should also ask they themselves have fallen for a foreign adversarial psyop to drive domestic division. Excusing the outright barbaric brutality of then-Imperial Japan and their determined refusal to cease hostilities by blaming the United States for defensively putting an end to it isn’t just revisionist history, it’s anti-American propaganda.
(I say this as the granddaughter of a WWII vet who served as a gunner on the USS Alabama. I enjoyed learning about the war in the Pacific through his service while growing up and inadvertently turned into a WWII history buff as a result.)
I spoke with my friend Stephen Yates about this on my program today and his response is must-watch:
