Below is an excerpt from People Magazine:
An 85-year-old woman from Idaho is being praised as a hero for fighting off a home intruder who broke into her Bingham County home in March.
Christine Jenneiahn was sleeping in her bedroom when a man — identified by authorities as Derek Condon — broke into her property on March 13 at around 2 a.m. local time.
Her son David Jenneiahn, who is disabled, was also at home at the time.
According to an incident review by Bingham County Prosecutor Ryan Jolley on Monday, April 9, Jenneiahn was woken up by Condon, who was “dressed in a military jacket, black ski mask, and pointing a gun and flashlight at her.”
East Idaho News reported that the home is in a rural area with no close neighbors. Condon, 39, broke a window in the back of the home to get inside. He is believed to have hit the 85-year-old lady in the head as she lay in bed, then forced her into the living room at gunpoint and handcuffed her to a chair.
Condon then went downstairs and rummaged through various rooms, looking for valuables. While he was downstairs, Jenneiahn somehow managed to drag or carry the wooden chair she was handcuffed to back into her bedroom, and retrieved her .357 Magnum revolver, which she kept under her pillow.
She then returned to the living room, hid the gun between the cushion and armrest of the couch she was seated next to, and waited.
When Condon came back upstairs, continuing to burglarized her home while threatening to kill her, she pulled her gun on him and opened fire, shooting him twice in the chest.
But it doesn’t end there…
Condon returned fire, hitting the elderly woman multiple times in her abdomen, leg, arm and chest. He then made it into the kitchen, where he died.
After being shot, Jenneiahn fell to the floor, still handcuffed to the wooden chair in the living room, and laid there for 10 hours until her disabled son came upstairs and found her. He reportedly gave her a phone, and they called 911. Sheriff’s deputies arrived just after noon and she was taken to the hospital.
The Bingham Country Sheriff’s Office called the case a “justifiable homicide,” and one official said Jenneiahn’s actions were “one of the most heroic acts of self-preservation I have heard of.”
Jenneiahn has since been discharged from the hospital, and is recovering, East Idaho News confirmed.
“Had Derek Condon survived, I would be charging him with multiple felonies, including attempted murder, kidnapping, burglary, aggravated battery and grand theft,” said Bingham County Prosecutor Ryan Jolley.
