The removal of God from public life in America has given rise not only to the liberal agenda, but to their false gods: Immorality and Self-Pleasure.
In the book of Exodus in the Bible, Moses headed to the top of Mount Sinai to meet with God. Every child has heard the story of Moses receiving the 10 commandments and bringing them back down to the children of Israel. When we think of this story, many of us probably get a visual of a valiant Charlton Heston from the 1956 film “The Ten Commandments.”
What we may not always think about, however, is how quickly the children of Israel allowed distractions to turn their hearts away from God.
They went from being awestruck by God’s power and majesty to worshipping a golden calf in just a few short chapters. How could this happen?
While it’s easy for us to sit back and judge the Israelites for their narrowmindedness, I find the parallels between Israel and America too similar to ignore.
With the very first commandment, God declared “Thou shalt have no others gods before me,” but that’s exactly what the Israelites did.
And that’s exactly what America has done, too.
We see the beginnings of this in the 1960’s, when they removed prayer from our schools. They removed the Bible and any mention of God from our public places.
I’m in my 30’s, and I remember in kindergarten how our teacher used to play the ukulele and ask the class for requests we could sing along with. On the very first day of school, a young girl raised her hand and requested “Jesus Loves Me,” and I remember being confused when the teacher said we couldn’t sing that one. This was in the 1990’s and believe me when I say it’s only gotten worse since then.
Blaise Pascal once said, “What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to full with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself.”
With the removal of God, it has created the opportunity for all kinds of illogical and immoral activities to rise in prominence. People are seeking to fill this “infinite abyss” with something, not realizing it can only be filled by God.
With God’s removal, truth is flipped upside down and anything is fair game. The Bible is banned. The American flag is a symbol of “white supremacy.” Being white is a crime, as is thinking for yourself. Gender is fluid, and one can decide to be any gender they want at any given moment of any given day. The farther we get away from God, the crazier society gets, because there is no moral compass on which we can guide our ideals.
The Israelites traded a living, breathing God who encompassed them with clouds and fire for a puny statue of a cow; there was no comparison. America has traded God and His favor for the cheap thrills of this life meant to only bring short lived pleasure, and again…there is no comparison.
It’s time for Christians in America to stand up. We’ve been silent for too long. Everyone has the freedom to choose what they believe in America, but we have allowed our God given freedoms to be silenced by a tireless, angry minority hellbent on erasing God from every facet of our lives.
Now is not the time for weak kneed, spineless Christianity. It’s time for men and women of God to take a bold and unapologetic stand while proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus.
When God is returned to His rightful place in our public places, then the puny, false gods we used to worship will be seen as the temporal, insignificant specks that they are.
It’s time to remove the golden calves on this world and worship a living God.
