The Biden administration is reportedly attempting to issue temporary identification cards to illegal migrants who are awaiting a final decision on their immigration cases, two government sources familiar with the situation told Axios.
The exact details are unclear, but the ID cards would apparently be given to migrants who are not in detention centers but illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border.
The cards would likely include a QR code that would direct cardholders to court information and documents through an app, the officials said.
The app could be accessed on smartphones that are being given to illegal migrants by the administration, as confirmed in April.
The cards may even be used to “access certain state benefit programs,” Axios reported. Migrants could also present the card to TSA to travel by plane.
The House Appropriations Committee has already allocated $10 million for the “ICE Secure Docket Card program” in its proposed fiscal 2023 appropriations bill.
“The ICE Secure Docket Card program is part of a pilot program to modernize various forms of documentation provided to provisionally released non-citizens through a consistent, verifiable, secure card,” an ICE spokesperson told Axios.
