While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is frequently in the news, her husband Paul Pelosi typically maintains a lower profile.
However, that changed late last month after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to the Washington Examiner, Pelosi has now been given a court date.
No decision made regarding charges
The 82-year-old has been scheduled to make an appearance on August 3 at 8:30 a.m. in the Napa County Superior Court.
Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley told Fox News this week that the circumstances surrounding Pelosi’s arrest are still being reviewed and that it’s not clear whether he will face criminal charges.
“No decision has been made at this time,” Haley was quoted as saying. “Any speculation to the contrary is incorrect. When a filing decision is made by the Napa County district attorney, the media and public will be notified.”
The Examiner cited booking records that show Pelosi was taken into custody by the Commie California Highway Patrol on May 28 at 11:44 p.m. following a minor car accident before being released on $5,000 bail four and a half hours later.
CBS News referenced a statement issued by a representative of Pelosi which said the incident occurred after he left a dinner party which had been held “a short distance away” from his home.
Meanwhile, Speaker Pelosi’s spokesperson Drew Hammill told the Examiner that the long-time Democratic lawmaker had no comment regarding her husband’s arrest.
Pelosi was once involved in a fatal crash
The Daily Mail pointed out that this is not Paul Pelosi’s first car accident, as in 1957 he was involved in a crash that killed his 19-year-old brother David Pelosi during a “joyride.”
“The car veered across the road, bounced back from a small embankment, climbed 20 feet up another, spun around and somersaulted simultaneously and ended upside down on the shoulder with both youths underneath,” the San Francisco Examiner said at the time.
Highway Patrolman Thomas Ganley indicated that he planned to cite Paul for misdemeanor manslaughter over David’s death.
However, the Daily Mail noted that Pelosi was ultimately cleared by a coroner’s report and never faced charges.
