Trump’s former ambassador to Israel ripped Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) for his silence amid the riots at Columbia University last week.
Hundreds of NYPD members marched on Columbia’s main campus at the center of New York City last Tuesday to disperse pro-Hamas students and demonstrators who illegally occupied the campus establishments.
“Tonight New York City is aflame with antisemitism. @SenSchumer, where the hell are you? This is your city, and you are the self-proclaimed guardian of the Jewish people. Crickets…, Friedman wrote on X.
Schumer was not only silent; he failed to de-escalate the situation. The New York senator deemed it enough to merely give a monologue on the Senate floor rather than take concrete action.
He said, “Smashing windows with hammers and taking over university buildings is not free speech. It is lawlessness. And those who did it should promptly face the consequences that are not merely a slap on the wrist.”
“Free speech, discussion, and even strong disagreement are fundamental American values, and campuses should be places where those values are cherished.
“Campuses cannot be places of learning, argument, and discussion when protests veer into criminality, and those who commit such acts are doing nothing to convince others that their cause is just.”
Most prominent Democrats were also mum about the protests, no less than the President himself.
The American people have not heard anything from Biden for more than a week that the university has been invaded by Hamas supporters—no speech nor any public remarks.
All statements and questions regarding the protests were answered by White House spokespeople.
When pressed for Biden’s comments, White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre responds, “The president is being kept regularly updated on what’s happening.”
“He is monitoring the situation closely.”
His last comment on the demonstrations was in a written statement on April 22, where he commented on the rising anti-Semitism on campuses.
Later that day, he briefly spoke to reporters and said, “I condemn the antisemitic protests” and added, “I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”
Last Wednesday, Jean Pierre was out once again speaking to the media. She touted Biden’s fight against antisemitism and said, “No president has spoken more forcefully about combating antisemitism than this president.”
“Let’s not forget, in 2017, he was very clear about the antisemitic vile that we saw on the streets in Charlottesville, Virginia. He called that out, and one of the reasons he stepped into the 2020 election is because of what he saw.”
However, this is not enough, and reporters continue to push back.
For the American people, his remarks on antisemitism are not the same as commenting on the growing unrest on college campuses.
Jean-Pierre pressed: “The president has been very, very clear about this,” Jean-Pierre reiterated. “He’s taken action.”
Well, that remains to be seen for now.
