A major poll conducted by Axios/Harris has found that a majority of Americans support mass deportation of illegal immigrants, and a whopping 42 percent of Democrats are on board with it.
The survey noted that 51 percent overall support what it describes as a “harsh” plan, which has been championed by Donald Trump, with 68 per cent of Republicans and 46 per cent of independents agreeing.
The real surprise was the number of Democrats that have warmed to the idea, with a further 30 percent of them also saying they would end birthright citizenship, which has long been guaranteed under the 14th Amendment.
Axios notes that “Americans are open to former President Trump’s harshest immigration plans, spurred on by a record surge of illegal border crossings.”
The outlet also notes that “Biden is keenly aware the crisis threatens his re-election. He’s sought to flip the script by accusing Trump of sabotaging Congress’ most conservative bipartisan immigration bill in decades.”
It continues, “But when it comes to blame, Biden so far has failed to shift the narrative: 32 percent of respondents say his administration is “most responsible” for the crisis, outranking any other political or structural factor.”
Back in January, Trump told a crowd in Iowa “On my first day back in the White House, I will terminate every Open Borders policy of the Biden administration, stop the invasion on our southern border, and begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”
Mark Penn, chairman of The Harris Poll and a former Clinton pollster said “I was surprised at the public support for large-scale deportations,” adding “I think they’re just sending a message to politicians: ‘Get this under control.”
