Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley launched his Senate campaign Tuesday, barnstorming the state and talking to voters about how he would better represent their values in Washington, D.C. than incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO).
Hawley, a Republican, made stops in Kansas City, Springfield, and St. Louis on Tuesday, meeting with voters and talking to the media about his campaign. Hawley is expected to attend a fundraiser with President Trump Wednesday evening in St. Louis.
“Claire McCaskill represents everything that has gone wrong in Washington,” Hawley told a Kansas City crowd. “She is the face of Washington’s failure.”
“She’s been in politics a lifetime – almost four decades,” said Hawley, a relative newcomer to the political scene.
“Any way you cut it, she has been a partisan, liberal Democrat,” he said of McCaskill, noting the two-term senator’s record of voting to raise taxes, increase the cost of health insurance, and stacking the courts with liberal judges.
“In her many years in Washington – many years – Claire McCaskill has done just the opposite of what you sent her to do,” the Republican said. “And now, she has the audacity to pretend that you don’t notice. Her strategy in this election is denial and destruction, and if you turn on a TV, you can see it at work now.”
“We can do better, and we can start right now,” Hawley said. “Missouri deserves a senator who will defend our great middle class, not destroy it. As attorney general, I fought Washington overreach and job-killing regulations.”
