A Sydney couple is recovering after a terrifying home invasion turned violent when two masked men stormed their house and stabbed them multiple times — in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.
The brutal attack happened around 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, in the suburb of Guildford West, while the couple’s three children, all under 10, were asleep inside. According to police, two men wearing face coverings and armed with a machete forced their way through the front door and attacked the 41-year-old father and 37-year-old mother, stabbing them repeatedly.
Neighbors told local outlets 7 News and 9 News that they were alerted by the father’s desperate screams for help. “The neighbor’s outside screaming,” one witness recalled. “There is blood everywhere. We tried to go and help her, and the husband said, ‘I don’t know what happened.’”
Several neighbors bravely chased the attackers, described as wearing black hoodies and white sneakers, as they fled into a waiting white sedan driven by a third suspect. The couple was rushed to a nearby hospital, where both are in stable condition. The father is expected to undergo surgery.
Police Superintendent Simon Glasser said investigators believe the attackers had been targeting someone else. “We believe they were looking for someone in particular and left when they were chased out,” he explained. “However, the family involved have no criminal links, so we believe they were after somebody else.”
Authorities praised the neighbors’ courage but urged caution in dangerous situations, advising anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact Granville Police Station or Crime Stoppers as the investigation continues.
