FORT MORGAN, CO – The Fort Morgan Airport remains closed following a tragic midair collision involving two planes on Sunday morning. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to arrive to lead the investigation into the crash.
Morgan County undersheriff John Horton reported receiving the distress call around 10:45 a.m. Two aircraft, a Cessna 172 and an Extra 300 aerobatic plane, were involved in the collision as one was approaching the airport.
Each plane carried two people. The occupants of the Cessna suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Sadly, one individual from the Extra 300 was pronounced dead at the site by the Morgan County coroner, while the other was taken to a local hospital.
Aviation experts are puzzled by the incident, noting that such midair collisions, though rare, have occurred more frequently in recent months. The absence of a control tower at Fort Morgan Airport means pilots must communicate their positions over a common frequency, a factor investigators will likely scrutinize.
The differing designs and capabilities of the aircraft might have contributed to visibility challenges, experts suggest. Investigators will examine not only the wreckage but also potential radio communication issues and mechanical problems.
The NTSB is set to begin its investigation on Monday afternoon. Until then, the crash site remains secured by sheriff’s deputies.
