A man was arrested after allegedly stealing a car with three children inside, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a dramatic crash in Malibu. The chaos unfolded Friday evening, August 29, in East Los Angeles.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), the suspect jumped into a Chrysler parked outside a convenience store around 6:40 p.m. while the children’s mother had briefly stepped inside. The car’s engine was running, and three children — ages 2, 6, and 8 — were strapped inside.
The children’s father, parked nearby, tried to stop the suspect but was dragged by the moving vehicle and suffered injuries to his upper body before falling to the ground. The suspect sped off westbound on Olympic Boulevard, triggering an intense police pursuit.
Officers from LASD’s East Los Angeles division chased the suspect along multiple roadways and Interstate 10. The pursuit finally ended in Malibu after the stolen Chrysler collided with four other vehicles. Witness Erica Trujillo told KABC that she “braced for impact” as the crash unfolded right in front of her and then saw the suspect leap from the car and run.
Authorities say the suspect fled on foot up a steep embankment and into a residential area before being captured by California Highway Patrol officers. The three children suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital for observation. Another woman involved in the crash was also hospitalized with injuries.
The suspect, described as a male Asian adult, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, possibly from the collision or during his attempted escape. He was taken to a hospital, and his identity will be released once the booking process is complete. Formal charges are pending.
