Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) faced immediate backlash after boasting about installing new trash cans on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens.
The congresswoman, a Democrat and founding member of the socialist “Squad,” took to social media earlier this month to celebrate what she called her “war on trash.”
“After meeting with local vendors and business owners, my office reached out to the New York City Department of Sanitation about the need for more trash cans along Roosevelt Ave,” AOC wrote on August 8.
“Thanks to their quick response, 51 trash cans were installed! Grateful for their partnership in keeping our community clean!”
Residents and critics were quick to point out that AOC ignored much bigger problems.
Roosevelt Avenue is notorious for its “Market of Sweethearts,” a red-light corridor filled with pimps, johns, and prostitutes, per the New York Post.
“Celebrating garbage cans is like putting sprinkles on s*it and calling it a birthday cake,” said Elmhurst Republican and City Council candidate Ramses Frias. “It’s all for show.”
“Of course, AOC won’t speak about what’s really happening here so she can keep up the facade that her district is amazing and a paradise,” Frias added.
Locals told The Post they have repeatedly complained about rampant crime and prostitution along the corridor. Some even urged the FBI to investigate alleged links between the Market of Sweethearts and organized crime.
“I have not personally seen Ocasio-Cortez since she’s been elected. I have seen her in a parade — that’s it,” said Rosa Sanchez, president of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition.
Three sex workers photographed on Roosevelt Avenue underscore the ongoing issues residents face daily. Citizens say the new trash cans do nothing to address the real danger on the street.
“Real talk, we need more Sanmen, or more overtime for the ones we do have,” commented Jackson Heights resident John McGarry, sharing photos of overflowing trash bins.
The city’s Department of Sanitation confirmed it replaced 48 missing trash baskets along Roosevelt Avenue between 82nd Street and 111th Street as part of routine maintenance—not 51 as AOC claimed.
“Unfortunately, corner litter baskets go missing—or sustain damage or excessive wear-and-tear—from time to time,” a department spokesperson said.
AOC’s office defended her actions, claiming business owners requested her help specifically with sanitation. Her office also noted she requested $500,000 in federal funding for nonprofits aiding victims of sexual violence.
Critics, however, argue AOC’s focus on trash cans is a distraction from the serious crime and public safety issues plaguing her district.
Despite the optics, AOC continues to advocate for the decriminalization of prostitution, a policy many residents say exacerbates the red-light corridor problem.
