French President Emmanuel Macron publicly displayed his lack of confidence in his American ally.
As United States President Donald Trump tries to negotiate peace in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, it appears that the French leader believes in the intellectual supremacy of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump threatened “consequences” for Putin and his country if he did not agree to bilateral talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by Monday, and a conversation between Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicates the European leaders are not optimistic.
Macron reportedly said that if Putin fails to agree to the talks by “the deadline set by President Trump, it means that once again President Putin played President Trump.”
“Unlike what had been agreed between President Trump and President Putin last week, when we were together in Washington, it is obviously not going to come to a meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Putin,” Merz said.
While there have been no outward indications of agreement yet from the Kremlin, a statement released to Russian outlet Interfax indicates that Putin has certain expectations for such a meeting, should it ever take place.
“Putin does not rule out the possibility of such a meeting, but believes that any high-level meeting must be well-prepared, so that it can finalize groundwork which first needs to be prepared at the expert level. It cannot be said that this expert work is in full swing, unfortunately not. We remain interested and ready for such talks.”
X users reacted to Macron’s statement, with many expressing contempt for the French president:
From an expert in the field of being played by Putin.

Still trying to drag the US into a conflict. If Macron is that bothered, there is absolutely nothing stopping him sending in his own French troops…nothing at all

Macron is trying to keep the Headlines off his 24% Approval Rating and the fact that he was groomed by his current “Wife” since he was 14.
He does not have the cojones to fix the terrorism in his own Country because he is so consumed with Ukraine.— Ron Paul Was Right (@BiGSr) August 29, 2025
