Beloved Republican lawmaker dies in farming accident at 75

A beloved South Dakota lawmaker, 75-year-old Richard Vasgaard, died in a farming accident on his family’s ancestral land.

A farmer by trade, Vasgaard entered politics later in life, winning his first election to the South Dakota House in 2020 as a Republican.

The lifelong Turner County resident died while working on farming equipment, it was confirmed. The tragedy was first reported by the Dakota Scout.

Farmer turned politician

Vasgaard’s family started farming in Turner County 125 years ago, according to his obituary, and he was proud to uphold that tradition.

The Sioux Falls native studied Agronomy at South Dakota State University, later settling on his family farm with his wife Joyce and their two kids.

He remained dedicated to farming his whole life and channeled his love of the land in his work as a lawmaker, serving on committees dealing with commerce and energy, transportation, and agriculture and natural resources.

His death was confirmed by House Speaker Jon Hansen (R), who praised Vasgaard for his humility and dedication to farmers.

“I was honored to serve alongside Rep. Richard Vasgaard,” said House Speaker Hansen (R). “Richard brought humility, wisdom, and a steady voice to our House chamber. His service was marked by an unwavering dedication to the citizens he represented, and to the agriculture industry he and his family worked in.”

“My family and I extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Joyce, as well as all of his family and friends. He will be missed.”

Tributes pouring in

Vasgaard first won a seat in the state House in 2020, representing District 17 for a single term. He was redistricted into District 16 in 2022 and lost a Republican primary.

He later returned to the state legislature, winning a race in District 16 last year.

Congressman Dusty Johnson (R) said, “Richard Vasgaard was a friend, a dedicated public servant, and a great South Dakotan. My prayers are with Joyce and his family during this difficult time.”

The state’s governor, Larry Rhoden (R), called Vasgaard “an honorable, God-fearing man who served our state with unwavering commitment.”

“Sandy and I are devastated by his loss,” Rhoden said. “He left a lasting impact on South Dakota, and his leadership will be deeply missed.”

We are so used to politicians who enter public life for the wrong reasons – but Vasgaard was clearly the exception to the rule.

Vasgaard is survived by his wife and two children.
