MADBURY, NH – A tragic series of events has left a small New Hampshire community reeling. Just a week before police discovered the bodies of Emily Long, her husband, and two of their children in their home, her employer had filed a police report alleging significant theft from his company.
Derek Fisher, owner of a local restaurant chain where Long served as Director of Operations, reported noticing discrepancies in the company’s finances. “We discovered numerous handwritten checks made out to Emily that were deposited into her personal account,” Fisher explained.
The alleged embezzlement began in January 2023, with more than $660,000 missing by July. Fisher initially hesitated to involve law enforcement, understanding that Long’s husband was battling a serious illness. “I tried to be compassionate given her circumstances,” he said.
On August 18, the community was stunned when news broke that Emily, her husband, and two of their children were found dead, with Emily suspected of committing the act. Fisher expressed profound sorrow, saying, “I was devastated. I cared deeply for her and her family.”
Surviving the tragedy is Emily’s third child, a toddler, who was unharmed. Fisher’s attention has now turned to the child. “Anything left should be for him. He deserves it all,” Fisher stated, emphasizing the child’s innocence in the situation.
Authorities stress that tragedies like this rarely have a single cause. They remind the public that support resources, such as the 988 Lifeline, are available for those in need.
The community continues to grapple with the aftermath, mourning the loss and trying to make sense of the events.
