Border czar Tom Homan alleges President Donald Trump faces no limits on his authority when it comes to making the U.S. safe — even as critics question the legality of his latest moves.
Press conference

At a recent press conference, Trump cited Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act to assert temporary control over the city’s Metropolitan Police Department. He also announced the deployment of 800 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., citing what he described as out-of-control crime — despite reports showing violent crime reached a 30-year low in 2024. Trump hinted that similar federal interventions could follow in other major cities governed by Democrats.
Reporters

While speaking to reporters, Homan was asked if he feels safe walking the streets of Washington, D.C., at night. “D.C. is a dangerous place,” Homan said. “I don’t go on the streets at night without a gun. And, you know, it’s dangerous. I mean, we see the crime in D.C., and you’ve got the Democrats saying that crime isn’t that bad. Come on. You walk through the streets of D.C. It’s not safe to walk the streets at night here.”
Other remark

Homan noted that the president is determined to restore the capital’s image. “Our capital should be a showpiece. And President Trump, he’s gonna make sure not only is it safe, it’s a showpiece for the whole world. And that’s the right thing to do for the greatest nation on Earth,” he said.
Other question

A reporter further questioned Homan about the 30-day limit set by the D.C. Home Rule Act, which requires congressional approval to extend presidential control of the District beyond that period. “Do you think 30 days is enough for that?” she asked. “We’ll see,” Homan replied. “President Trump doesn’t have a limitation on his authority to make this country safe again. There’s no limitation on that.”
