World Series champion Mark Teixeira is officially entering politics. The former New York Yankees first baseman announced Wednesday that he is running for Congress in Texas’ 21st District.
In a statement posted on social media, Teixeira said he is “ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”
“As a proud Texan and lifelong conservative who loves our country, I’m ready to fight for the principles that make Texas strong and America exceptional,” he wrote. “It takes teamwork to win, and I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”
Teixeira’s move comes after Congressman Chip Roy revealed he would not seek re-election, instead launching a campaign for Texas Attorney General.
The former Yankee, a two-time All-Star and World Series champion in 2009, now hopes to shift from the baseball diamond to the political arena as Republicans look to hold onto the district.
