It is all Constitutional. Ontario and Quebec already have their own Provincial Forces and when I was Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador the Government expanded the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary , then a City Force in the Capital of St . John’s to be a Provincial Force expanding its authority over an expanded St. John’s Region, to the west coast of the Island and To Labrador West.
This from the RNC website :
‘The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial Police Service. The RNC is a modern, progressive, police agency that responds to the needs of the community by seeking advice and input from those it serves.
The RNC is a fully integrated police service made up of approximately 420 police officers and 100 civilian employees who are dedicated to ‘Building Safe and Healthy Communities Together’.
The RNC provides service to 29 communities in three jurisdictions serving approximately 257,000 people.’
The Quebec Provincial Police serves all of Quebec and The Ontario Provincial Police all of Ontario. Together that is over 24 million Canadians. So over half of Canadians are serviced by Provincial Police Forces
My understanding is that the Alberta Government is still talking an expanded Sheriff System , not a Provincial Police Service like in Quebec , Ontario and parts of Newfoundland .
Why the hesitation?
If Alberta is so eager to exercise its jurisdiction this is a no brainer . The Alberta Nationalists /Separatists that support Premier Smith must be very frustrated with this . And while they’re at it why don’t they exercise full health jurisdiction and exit the Canada Health Act?
This all can be done within Canada !!!
