Senators are scheduled to begin their summer recess this coming Monday and will not return until the beginning of next month.
However, President Donald Trump recently demanded that those plans be crushed so that Senators can work on confirming his nominees.
Only 118 nominees confirmed to date
As the Washington Examiner reported, Trump made his expectations known in a Truth Social post on Thursday evening, writing, “The Senate must stay in Session, taking no recess, until the entire Executive Calendar is CLEAR!!!”
“We have to save our Country from the Lunatic Left,” Trump insisted, “Republicans, for the health and safety of the USA, DO YOUR JOB, and confirm All Nominees. They should NOT BE FORCED TO WAIT.”
The Examiner pointed out that 160 of Trump’s 1,300 nominees are ready to be voted on. Senators have thus far only confirmed 118 candidates, with the latest being Department of Agriculture General Counsel Tyler Clarkson.
This is not the first time that Trump has expressed a desire to see the Senate remain in session, as he put forward a similar message last weekend to Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
Thune floats recess appointments
Trump’s latest comments reiterated a similar Truth Social post from this past weekend, which he directed towards Thune.
“Hopefully the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!!” the president stated.
In response, the Senate majority leader indicated that he was open to the idea of senators staying in Washington for the duration of August.
However, Thune also suggested that the president could rely on his authority to make recess appointments under Article II, Section 2, Clause 2 of the Constitution.
As the Library of Congress website explains, recess appointees are permitted to serve until the next session of Congress ends.
Lee calls on colleagues to “stop Democrat obstruction”
Trump’s call for senators to skip their recesses has found support from Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee, who echoed the president’s message.
Senate Republicans can stop Democrat obstruction of President Trump’s nominees by simply working through recess until they’ve had enough.
If Democrats win, it’s because we let them. https://t.co/8KDA0O6daT
