Members of the U.S. Senate are scheduled to take a break on Aug. 4 and will not return to work until the first of next month.
However, President Donald Trump recently told senators to call off their recess and focus on confirming his nominees.Â
Trump to Senate: “Do your job”
According to the Washington Examiner, Trump issued that demand via a post to his Truth Social platform on Thursday evening.
“The Senate must stay in Session, taking no recess, until the entire Executive Calendar is CLEAR!!!” the president wrote.
“We have to save our Country from the Lunatic Left,” Trump declared before adding, “Republicans, for the health and safety of the USA, DO YOUR JOB, and confirm All Nominees. They should NOT BE FORCED TO WAIT.”
The Examiner pointed out that there are roughly 1,300 nominees who have yet to be confirmed, of whom 160 are ready to be voted on.
As of Thursday, the Senate had only voted to confirm 118 candidates, with the latest being Department of Agriculture General Counsel Tyler Clarkson.
Trump asks Senate majority leader to stay in session
This is not the first time that Trump has expressed a desire to see the Senate remain in session, as he put forward a similar message last weekend to Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
“Hopefully the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!!” the president wrote in an earlier Truth Social post.
The Examiner noted that for his part, Thune expressed openness to the prospect of lawmakers remaining on Capitol Hill throughout August.
Thune also suggested that Trump could make recess appointments, an option under which appointees would serve until the next session of Congress expires.
Lee: “If Democrats win, it’s because we let them”
Trump is not alone in calling for Senators to remain in Washington and confirm the president’s nominees, as Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee has done so as well.
Senate Republicans can stop Democrat obstruction of President Trump’s nominees by simply working through recess until they’ve had enough.

“Senate Republicans can stop Democrat obstruction of President Trump’s nominees by simply working through recess until they’ve had enough,” Lee wrote on X before warning that “[i]f Democrats win, it’s because we let them.”
