A 29-year-old Somali national has been arrested in the German town of Zweibrücken under an international warrant issued by Italian prosecutors in Palermo.
He is accused of kidnapping and torturing migrants in Libya, and of murdering a child by slitting her throat after she allegedly resisted a sexual assault.
As reported by Il Giornale, the arrest followed a joint operation by German police and Italian investigators from the SCO, SCICO, and the Palermo Flying Squad.
According to investigators, the Somali suspect played a key role in migrant detention centers in the Libyan town of Bani Walid, where traffickers held African migrants before smuggling them to Europe. There, he was allegedly responsible for enforcing order through violence on behalf of Libyan traffickers.
Witnesses say he carried out beatings and torture to extort ransom money from the victims’ families in exchange for their release and onward travel to Europe.
The most serious charge relates to the murder of a child, reportedly a fellow Somali. Authorities believe the suspect attempted to sexually assault the girl, and when she resisted, he stabbed her in the throat. He then allegedly filmed the incident and intended to use the footage to blackmail her family.
The investigation began after a Somali man who arrived in Lampedusa in 2023 filed a formal complaint, identifying a fellow migrant as responsible for the atrocities committed in Libya.
Italian authorities interviewed others who had arrived with him on the same boat, and their accounts corroborated the allegations.
It is unclear how he was allowed to leave Italy upon arrival and travel to Germany.
Investigators tracked the suspect’s Facebook activity to an IP address located in Bani Walid. That same IP address was later used to access the internet from Italy and Germany, helping police to locate and apprehend him.
The suspect is expected to be extradited to Italy to face trial.
