It’s “imperative” that the Senate approves President Donald Trump’s nominees as soon as possible, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., told The Daily Signal.
“President Trump is the only president to have nominees presented and not confirmed on voice votes,” Blackburn said in an exclusive interview, “and it is imperative that we move some of these U.S. attorneys, some of these deputy assistants into blocks and that we pass them, unblock, and make certain that we get these individuals confirmed.”
Trump has about 140 nominees awaiting action on the Senate floor.
Senate Democrats agreed to move directly to a vote to confirm Marco Rubio as secretary of state. Since then, Democrats have pushed for procedural votes to invoke cloture on the next 107 nominees brought to the floor.
“The Democrats are being obstructionists,” Blackburn said. “They are requiring a cloture, then a vote on each one of these, and many of these have gone by voice vote in the past. Joe Biden had had 44 confirmations done by a voice vote.”
The president has advocated that the Senate remain in session instead of going on its customary recess for almost six weeks in order to confirm the rest of his nominees.
“Hopefully, the very talented John Thune, fresh off our many victories over the past two weeks and, indeed, 6 months, will cancel August recess (and long weekends!), in order to get my incredible nominees confirmed. We need them badly!!!” Trump said on TruthSocial.
In addition to canceling the August recess, the Senate majority leader also has the option of increasing the Senate workweek to seven days.
Democrats’ determination to thwart the duly-elected president’s agenda shows they learned nothing from losing the November election, Blackburn said.
“They lost at the ballot box,” Blackburn said. “They have lost on the floor of the House and the Senate. They are losing in the courts, and they feel like they’ve got one thing left and that is obstruction. So every day they wake up trying to obstruct Republicans and President Donald Trump. And every day we wake up, and every day I am focused on doing what the American people sent us here to do.”
Blackburn said she is focused on doing what Tennesseans elected her to do in the Senate: “Support President Trump in his agenda, get the border secure, get inflation down, get crime down in our cities, restore our standing in the world, rebuild our military, get men out of women’s sports, and President Donald Trump is delivering.”
