A trans activist has been arrested in the Croatian capital of Zagreb this week on suspicion that he murdered a well-known conceptual artist. Sonja Hranjec, 36, was the frontman of punk band Abergaz and lived at a controversial “collective home” for “artists” in the city.
Hranjec was arrested by police on July 27 at the scene of the crime, a street near the Medika Autonomous Cultural Center. The victim, a 43-year-old conceptual artist known as VG, had been stabbed to death with a “sharp object” on a nearby street corner in broad daylight. One Croatian media outlet has reported that the weapon used in the killing was a dagger.
Hranjec was expected to appear before a judge to determine if he would remain in custody, but it is currently unclear if he was released, or whether he is being housed in a female jail. Zagreb police have not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
Croatian press has been referring to Hranjec as “female” in their news coverage of the crime. According to one news site, Hranjec transitioned 15 years ago. He was previously known as Njec Hranjec.
Since transitioning, Hranjec has been active in the trans activist community, and has frequented protests and other events across Europe. In April, Hranjec was invited to perform at the Manchester Punk Festival with his band, Abergaz. During the visit, he was photographed posing with a sign that read: “There are men without penises, women without vaginas, and transphobes without teeth.”
Both Hranjec and the victim lived within the Medika Autonomous Cultural Centre, a “non-partisan, non-profit, non-governmental citizen association” located within a former pharmaceutical factory. The city of Zagreb demanded the centre be vacated in 2017, but backed down after immense public pressure. It was known for housing both artists and troubled persons. One Croatian news story claimed that Hranjec moved to Medika “after being left on the streets due to a dispute with [his] family.”
Hranjec and the deceased are alleged to have had previous disputes. According to media, Hranjec had publicly accused the victim of threats and physical attacks, and called police on the victim in April of 2025.
However, on Reddit, an anonymous user claims to have worked for the victim, and described suspected killer Hranjec as “two meters tall and twice as big and strong as the deceased.” They also claimed that Hranjec “collected money for transition that [he] spent on [himself], verbally attacked the deceased multiple times and tried to kick him [the victim] out of his room…”
This same user claims that media reports portraying VG, the deceased, as an aggressor are difficult to believe: “I witnessed physical attacks on the deceased multiple times where he wouldn’t even defend himself, let alone attack someone… What they wrote about him is a big lie. A worker among the lazy, an athlete among drug addicts, a good person among lunatics… I’m writing this so that at least a few of you read it and that his name is defended to some extent.”
Hranjec published a book about trans activism, and his own transition, titled “Two Weeks before World War III” in November 2024.
The publisher, Jesenki i Turk, describes the book as: “Sonja Hranjec’s first novel, in which, through the protagonist Matija, she counts down fourteen days and rushes towards the apocalyptic end. In doing so, she lucidly combines traumatic and creative features from her life, and her own experience of social and cultural aggression towards her transgender ‘metamorphosis’ takes us insiderly through the life of Zagreb’s punk subculture. The experiences of a young woman in sexual transformation abound with the violence to which she is constantly exposed.”
