President Donald Trump fired off letters Thursday to the CEOs of 17 major pharmaceutical companies, demanding immediate action on lowering drug prices.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the letters follow an executive order Trump signed earlier this year aimed at slashing prescription costs for American families.
“Americans are paying more than triple what other developed nations pay for the same drugs,” Leavitt said. “President Trump is determined to end that.”
During the briefing, she read aloud a letter sent to Eli Lilly CEO David Ricks. Copies of all 17 letters were later posted to Trump’s TRUTH Social account and made available to the press.
In the Eli Lilly letter, Trump cited his May 12 executive order, “Delivering Most-Favored-Nation Prescription Drug Pricing to American Patients,” which aims to level U.S. drug prices with those in Europe and other wealthy nations.
“Brand name drugs here are up to three times more expensive than anywhere else,” Trump wrote. “That ends with my administration.”
He gave drugmakers 60 days to commit to four demands: extend “most-favored-nation” pricing to Medicaid, guarantee it for all new drugs, reinvest foreign profits into U.S. patients, and allow direct purchasing at those lower rates.
Trump said Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Medicare chief Dr. Mehmet Oz are ready to implement these measures and called for companies to engage with them “immediately in good faith.”
“If you refuse to step up, we’ll use every tool we have to stop this abuse,” Trump warned. “This is a vital national priority — and Americans need relief now.”
