Hungarian authorities have dismantled a well-organized drug trafficking network operating in Budapest, arresting five individuals during a high-risk raid involving over 100 police officers. The suspects, including a recently turned 18-year-old, are accused of distributing large quantities of crystal meth across the capital.
According to a statement from the National Bureau of Investigation (KR NNI), the operation was launched following a tip-off from the National Defence Service (NVSZ). The raid took place on 21 July at five locations, including the capital’s 9th and 13th districts and a rural site in Szabolcs County.
Given reports that the suspects might be armed, Hungary’s Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK) led the raid on one of the more sensitive locations in Budapest’s 13th district. Other targets were secured by NNI tactical units.
Authorities say the ring was led by a 65-year-old man who sourced the drugs and distributed tasks among his associates, including packaging, storage, and sale. One of his accomplices, a young man he allegedly recruited while still a minor, actively participated in sales and logistics.
The operation also revealed that the gang had been active for more than a year. The leader used high-end rental cars to transport drugs to agreed drop points, while lower-tier dealers operated out of their homes. One such base was a flat in Gát Street in Budapest’s 9th district, where residents had previously reported suspicious activity.
Police confiscated drugs, cash, data storage devices, tools for drug production, and several vehicles. Two handguns were also found: experts are currently analyzing whether they are live firearms. Cyber investigators from the NVSZ helped secure and analyze digital evidence at the scene.
Investigators estimate the gang trafficked several kilograms of narcotics, earning substantial profits. The operation was described as highly structured and sustained, suggesting the suspects relied on drug sales as their primary source of income.
All five suspects were detained following questioning. The alleged ringleader faces multiple charges, including trafficking new psychoactive substances, abusing a minor in criminal activity, organized drug trafficking, and weapons-related offenses. The others face similar charges.
