ChatGPT is getting a new feature designed to help students learn more effectively. OpenAI announced Tuesday that it will soon launch a “study mode,” which walks users through each step of a problem instead of just providing the final answer.
New AI software to aid students’ learning
The feature is meant to promote deeper understanding and critical thinking by guiding students through the process. It will be available for subjects like math, science and others, with structured explanations.
“ChatGPT is becoming one of the most widely used learning tools in the world. Students turn to it to work through challenging homework problems, prepare for exams, and explore new concepts,” the announcement said.
OpenAI said the advancement of its AI technology brings new opportunities and raises questions about how students can use ChatGPT as a tool to support learning rather than just get answers.
Additionally, part of the conversation involved students using the chatbot for their work and cheating, rather than utilizing it as a resource. According to OpenAI, about one-in-three college students use the chatbot, which helped shape the new software.
“Instead of doing the work for them, study mode encourages students to think critically about their learning,” said Robbie Torney, senior director of AI at Common Sense Media. “Even in the AI era, the best learning still happens when students are excited about and actively engaging with the lesson material.”
Before the announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared on Theo Von’s podcast “This Past Weekend” to discuss the rapid pace of AI development. Altman believes these advances will change the way education works in the future.
“I think, fast forward 18 years, it’s going to look like a very, very different thing,” he said.
How does the study mode work?
The new study mode helps students learn by guiding them through problems with questions and hints. It breaks information into clear, manageable sections to make complex topics easier to understand.
The feature adapts to each student’s skill level and remembers previous chats to personalize lessons. It also includes quizzes and feedback to support learning and retention. Students can turn study mode on or off during conversations to fit their needs.
Early users describe it as a helpful, on-demand tutor that explains difficult concepts clearly and patiently.
OpenAI said the new study mode will launch on ChatGPT Edu in the coming weeks. Users who have Free, Plus, Pro and Team can start using it on Tuesday.
