(NewsNation) — The gunman who opened fire in a Manhattan office building has been identified by authorities as Shane Tamura.
Tamura, of Nevada, shot himself in the chest in the hallway of the 33rd floor of 345 Park Avenue after shooting five people, four of them fatally, officials said.
Officers said they found identification on Tamura’s body, including a concealed carry permit from Las Vegas. Police believe he acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat.
The New York City Police Department officer killed has been identified as Officer Didraul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh. Islam was off-duty, working a private security detail at the time of his death. He leaves behind his pregnant wife and two children.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Islam was a “man of God” who was assigned to the 47th precinct of the Bronx. The names of the other victims have not yet been released.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a news conference Monday night that Tamura exited a double-parked BMW, registered in his name, on Park Avenue, carrying an M4 rifle, and headed toward 345 Park Ave.
He immediately opened fire on the NYPD officer as he entered the building and shot a woman who tried to take cover and then began “spraying” the lobby with gunfire, Tisch said.
According to the commissioner, he made his way to the elevator bank and shot a security guard who was taking cover behind a security desk, and shot another man in the lobby, then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where one person was shot and killed on the floor.
Tamura then walked down a hallway and shot himself, the commissioner said. Tisch added that a revolver, ammunition and magazines were found in Tamura’s vehicle. According to law enforcement in Nevada, he had a history of mental illness.
