A Jamaican national who was working as a police officer was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Maine after he illegally tried to buy a gun.
Jon Luke Evans, who was in the country illegally after overstaying his visa, was employed as a reserve officer for the Old Orchard Beach Police Department at the time of his July 25 arrest and was attempting to purchase the firearm for his job, triggering a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) alert.
On Monday, ICE announced the illegal alien’s arrest in a news release.

“Evans admitted to ICE officers that he attempted to purchase the firearm for his employment as a police officer with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department. His attempt to purchase the firearm triggered an alert to ATF agents, who worked in coordination with ICE to make the arrest,” ICE stated in the news release.
“Jon Luke Evans not only broke U.S. immigration law, but he also illegally attempted to purchase a firearm. Shockingly, Evans was employed as a local law enforcement officer,” ICE ERO Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said.
“The fact that a police department would hire an illegal alien and unlawfully issue him a firearm while on duty would be comical if it weren’t so tragic. We have a police department that was knowingly breaking the very law they are charged with enforcing in order to employ an illegal alien. ICE Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing criminal alien threats from our New England communities,” Hyde added.
According to ICE, “Evans lawfully entered the United States Sept. 24, 2023, at the Miami International Airport, in Florida. However, he violated the terms of his lawful admission when he overstayed his visa. Evans was scheduled to depart the U.S. October 1, 2023, but never boarded the flight.”
X users reacted to news of Evans’ arrest with many expressing disbelief that an illegal alien would have ever been hired as a police officer in the first place.
How in the hell did an illegal become a cop?

How did he pass the background checks?

Scary that MA cities and towns might have illegals as police officers. Is it really happening?

Isn’t it a federal crime to hire an illegal?

I am no longer surprised by anything that happens in Maine.
Hiring an illegal for the police force is beyond understanding.
Did the department not do a background check and knowingly ignore the results, or is this just sloppy police work ?— Jamie Desilets (@JayLynn651) July 28, 2025
What the hell?
I don’t understand how his can even happen unless someone is willfully looking the other way.

This is DEI… Old Orchard Beach’s first female police chief Elise Chard plasters images over social media of her hiring a non-white police officer, Jon Luke Evans… who turns out to be an illegal alien prohibited from carrying a firearm.https://t.co/PG11E30XwJ pic.twitter.com/VgQKyqfVlz

Everyone involved in ‘hiring’ this illegal should be fired immediately.

The police department would be a good case for the @DOJCrimDiv to investigate. Until this administration goes after the employers, the illegal immigrants will remain here.

“As part of the hiring process, the Town reviewed multiple forms of identification, including photo identification, and submitted Evans’ I-9 form to the Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify Program,” Old Orchard Beach Police Chief Elise Chard said in a statement, according to the Portland Press Herald.
“The Department of Homeland Security then verified that Evans was authorized to work in the U.S. … Evans would not have been permitted to begin work as a reserve officer until and unless Homeland Security verified his status,” she added.
“In a very similar case in April, ICE officers in Falmouth arrested Gratien Milandou Wamba, an illegally present, 32-year-old citizen of Congo, who was working as a corrections officer. Officers with ICE Boston’s Scarborough, Maine sub office arrested Milandou Wamba for immigration violations after he allegedly illegally attempted to purchase a firearm,” ICE noted in the news release.
