Former FBI agent Peter Strzok erased all of his posts on the social media platform X on Monday, following a renewed spotlight on his role in the investigation into alleged collusion between President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.
The move comes shortly after Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard publicly released documents alleging a “years-long coup” against Trump that began after his victory over Hillary Clinton.
The documents and accompanying memo, made public on July 18, name Strzok as a principal actor in what Gabbard described as an effort by intelligence and law enforcement officials to undermine the Trump presidency.
Among the actions attributed to Strzok was his intervention to prevent the FBI from closing its investigation into retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Trump’s first national security advisor.
Flynn was targeted despite the absence of clear evidence warranting continued scrutiny.
Strzok’s decision to delete his X posts follows Gabbard’s referral of the documents to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for a criminal investigation.
The referral reportedly includes former FBI Director James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan as potential targets for a DOJ “strike force” intended to review misconduct during the 2016 election cycle and early Trump administration.
The Daily Caller outlined that since his dismissal from the FBI in August 2018, Strzok has maintained a public profile, appearing regularly as a commentator on MSNBC and serving as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, where he teaches courses on counterintelligence and national security.
On television, Strzok has defended his actions during the Russia investigation and continued to allege that Trump colluded with Russian interests.
During a November 2022 MSNBC interview with host Nicolle Wallace, Strzok asserted, “I think the reality is, people are still around the world looking to the United States and trying to figure out, is this flirtation with Trump done?”
He added, “Is Trump not only the individual, sort of national security problems he had, are there also problems that his mistrust of the NATO alliance, his coziness with people like Vladimir Putin, his hesitation to support Ukraine…Trump very much aligns with those.”
Special Counsel John Durham’s report, released on May 15, 2023, found that the FBI “did not and could not corroborate” key claims from the Steele Dossier, a document that was the basis for obtaining warrants to surveil communications of Trump associates during the 2016 campaign.
Durham’s report specifically criticized Strzok and former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, noting their “pronounced hostile feelings toward Trump” expressed in text messages exchanged during the investigation.
The Caller noted that Strzok’s termination followed the discovery of text messages he sent to FBI attorney Lisa Page, with whom he was engaged in a personal relationship.
The texts contained disparaging comments about then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during the FBI’s investigation into alleged Russian interference and campaign collusion.
David Bowditch, who served as the FBI’s deputy director, described Strzok’s conduct in a draft termination letter: “In my 23 years in the FBI, I have not seen a more impactful series of missteps which called into question the entire organization and more thoroughly damaged the reputation of the entire organization.”
The recent revelations and Gabbard’s referral highlight ongoing concerns about the conduct of intelligence and law enforcement officials during the 2016 election and the early Trump administration.
The DOJ’s creation of a dedicated “strike force” to investigate potential wrongdoing among senior officials suggests an intensified effort to hold those responsible accountable, per the Caller.
