The common adage is when having conversations, avoid talking about politics and religion. Some of us, like myself, love to talk about both politics and religion. It seems like Representative James Talarico of Texas and I have that in common. To be fair, that may be the only thing that we have in common.
James Talarico is a state representative from the state of Texas and is currently studying to become a pastor. He serves in the state house and is also a seminary student. Many have hailed Representative Talarico as the future of Democratic Politics.
Yes, Representative Talarico is a millennial Democratic lawmaker, who is in a unique position, at the intersection of public policy and faith. Recently, the 36 year old lawmaker was a guest on the popular, ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast.

The representative has years of experience supporting “pro-choice” legislation and fighting actively against the pro-life cause. According to a scorecard provided by Texas Right to Life, he has a total pro-life support score of 0%.
During the course of the podcast interview, Representative Talarico laid out his vision for his version of progressive Christianity, and how his faith inspires his progressive ideology.
I will admit, Representative Talarico is knowledgeable on scripture. He can quote verses well and clearly has studied both history and theology. I will also admit that I disagree with the majority of his interpretations. It is quite clear that he also hangs out to a loosely interpreted version of faith and Christianity.
I do believe that Represenative Talarico has a unique platform as a young elected official and faith leader. Throughout the course of the interview, he agree on the fact that Christianity is losing ground and popularity. We agree that this needs to change. However, we disagree on the ways to achieve that.
Another point of agreement makes the case for faith being needed as a prescription for the many ails of society. We both believe that a lot of issues with mental health, loneliness, violence etc could be solved with faith and fellowship.
Now, finally, to the meat of this article and the meat of our disagreement, regarding the issue of abortion. Represenative Talarico states the Bible supports and affirms the women’s right to choose abortion. He also points to the bible to support a plethora of other progressive causes, with little to no evidence. However, that is discussion and analysis for another article.
For example, he points to a passage in Genesis where God breathed life into Adam and Eve. He is making the case that life begins when an individual takes their first breath. That view is easily debunked through the various verses regarding God’s love and regard for the life in the womb. He also ties this in with Judaism. However, views of Judaism toward abortion are often misinterpreted. In fact, many Jewish people are becoming rampant supporters of the pro-life cause.
Another example regards the story where Jesus meets with the Samaritan woman at the well. While I am not totally sure what example he is making her, I assume he is using the example of Christ visiting and loving the ‘least of these.’ For example, Jesus visiting and meeting with tax collectors. I believe his case is that Jesus loves the sinner and the brokenhearted. This is absolutely true. More churches need to step up and help women who are considering having an abortion, and those who have previously had an abortion. However, that does not naturally point to acceptance and affirmation of that sin.
Another and the final example I will cover is regarding the story of Mary and the birth of Jesus. The Representative claims that the Angel asked Mary’s consent to be impregnated. He points to that as the biblical affirmation that women have the right to choose. In the scripture, the Angel of the Lord presents to Mary and announces what is to come. Taking this passage and interpreting it to physical pregnancy, especially choosing to end a pregnancy, this is an extreme stretch and distorts scripture.
In addition to the above, the representative argues that the bible says nothing to indicate a pro-life position. However, the Bible has a lot to say about respecting life, and specifically the unborn
Examples include Psam 127: 3-5, Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 45:9-11, Exodus 4:11, James 1:27, and many others.
For these points above, I strongly disagree with Represenative Talarico. I do respect some of his views, and his willingness to share his faith. However, using the podcast’s fanbase and popularity to mislead on scripture is extremely dangerous.
