Secretary of State Marco Rubio just gave his most direct answer yet on a potential run for president in 2028.
In an interview with Fox News host Lara Trump, Rubio hinted at future ambitions but remained focused on his current role serving under President Donald Trump.
Rubio, who ran against Trump in 2016, has consistently polled as the second most likely Republican to win the nomination in 2028—trailing only Vice President J.D. Vance.
“You are talked about quite frequently as a possible contender in 2028,” Lara asked. “Do you have your sights set outside of the State Department?”
Rubio praised Vance and kept his answer vague—but noticeably didn’t rule anything out.
“Well, I think J.D. Vance would be a great nominee,” Rubio said. “He’s doing a great job as vice president. He’s a close friend and I hope he intends to do it.”
Rubio then acknowledged the limitations of his current position, as Trending Politics reported.
“There’s actually rules against me being involved in domestic politics,” he added. “I want to do this job. Honestly, you never know what the future holds. You never rule things out… things change very quickly.”
He said that if he can complete his tenure as Secretary of State and continue working at the current pace, he’ll consider his service a success.
“If we get things done at the pace that we’ve been doing the last six months, I’ll be able to look back at my time in public service and say I made a difference,” Rubio said. “And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career.”
Rubio’s comments come as the 2028 Republican primary field begins to take shape.
Vice President J.D. Vance remains the clear frontrunner, but Rubio’s name continues to dominate second-place polling.
Vance also received a major boost this week in a new Emerson College poll.
The survey shows Vance defeating multiple top Democrats in hypothetical matchups.
In a head-to-head with former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Vance leads 44% to 43%.
Buttigieg, a longtime favorite of party donors, has consistently polled near the top of Democratic primary surveys—but has yet to break past his 2020 ceiling.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom also trails Vance in the Emerson poll, 44% to 41%.
Newsom has been on a national media tour and was recently spotted in early primary states.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) matched Newsom’s numbers—also losing to Vance 44% to 41%.
Vance’s narrow but consistent edge over top Democrat contenders confirms his growing momentum.
Rubio, although appearing to remain diplomatic, seems to have his options open.
The Secretary of State appears to remain focused on his work in the Trump administration.
